*New Halloween for Hunger
The Problem:
The problem is absurd. Living in Canada during times of economic prosperity shouldn’t mean that almost 900,000 people were served in Toronto by food banks last year; 38% of these people were children. We are all living through an invisible hunger crisis every day. Well, invisible to most of us anyway.
It is important to fully understand the problem before we seek a solution. Try to imagine the life of the countless working poor, many of which are new immigrant with a college/university degree, with children. The average income per month of the average food bank user is $954. After rent and utilities they are left with $4.79 a day; this is less than the price of a round-trip TTC fare for adults.
With tens of thousands of people using food banks just in Toronto every month, the scope of the problem is vast. The worst part is that these numbers have only been on the rise. Since 1995, food bank usage has gone up 79%. Hunger as such a prevalent problem in today’s society; it should be making headlines daily.
Halloween for Hunger can promote an atmosphere of change and create a cultural realization that hunger must end and a movement to end it.
What is Halloween for Hunger:
Halloween for Hunger is a project, started by Professor Jonathan White during his college days, which combats hunger at a grassroots level. On Halloween night, H4H participants dress up and go Halloween-for-Hungering. Instead of asking for sweets on All Hollow’s Eve, non-perishable food items will be requested to be donated to your local food bank. Alternatively, monetary donations can be collected as well, all proceeds going of course towards the food bank.
